Every three months, each CDW provides a report on what they have been doing in each of these communities, and what they plan on doing next. The last reports were delivered in July 2010, describing the work completed between the beginning of April and the end of June 2010.
Progress/Achievements
- Afghan youth group: Delivered creative mental health awareness sessions for young Afghan boys focusing on stress, homework and ‘wellness recovery trinket boxes’.
- Art on the run: Promoting well being through art
- Becklin Centre: Arranged shadowing sessions, attended healthy living forum at Becklin
- Community Capacity Building: Promoting positivity, health and well being.
- IOM: Created links with ‘International Organisation for Migration’
- Irish Intergenerational Day: Developed an information pack on Migration
- Leeds Refugee Forum: Assisted in building strong partnerships with community groups accessing the forum.
- Library service: promotion of services to the wider community during Refugee week.
- Partnership and Social inclusion focus group: End Goal 1, “people achieve their agreed goals for improving health and improving lives”.
- Refugee Council: Planned and co-facilitated an interpreting workshop
- Refugee Week steering group: Assisted with the launch event, ‘football tournament for refugee community groups and ‘Together for Leeds’, cultural day event.
- RETAS – Assisted in designing employment based interview questions and conducting mock interviews with refugees
- Shantona Youth Group: Planned and delivered a session on Stress and homework help
- Touchstone volunteer project: project focusing on organizing ‘Together for Leeds’ event for Refugee week
- YOCAS: Assisted in planning and mapping the integration needs of the Congolese community, seminars focusing on Mental Health, Education and Faith
- Training: Attended ‘Risk Assessment training’, ‘safeguarding’ and ‘First Aid Training’
Tips for sharing
- Communicating regularly with partners ensures mutual understanding at all stages of work.
Lessons Learned
- Too many instructions given during an activity can be confusing, less is more is a better approach to take.
Priorities for next quarter
- Revisit CDW volunteer objectives and complete placement evaluations
- Revisit work being undertaken on the wards
- Visit key members of the Afghan community
- Develop sessions with Shantona’s Youth group
- Participate in summer events, Leeds South Festival, Unity Day and Carnival
- Work closely with East Leeds Health For All ‘community day event’
- Initiate and generate more work with RAS community groups
- Provide support to migration hubs
- Work closely with all team members and across different community groups
- Attend relevant networking events and regular meetings
